I continue to explore and study individual images that describe how, what and why I was inspired to create them. Did they immediately capture my eye's attention, or was it in the editing process. What did I learn and what did I carry through to the next shoot. Did they just inspire me or teach me. Do they impress me this week, this month, this year, or simply today. Have they become iconic images in my portfolio, are they competition worthy or a blog submission. Does it matter. What counts primarily are my clients expectations and needs and mine are secondary. I am a wedding photographer.

When I think about my career in wedding photography the memories go way back to my first wedding that I assisted. It was a Jewish wedding and it was truly an eye opening experience! First time I wore a kippah or maybe it was the second time. I grew up in a Greek Jewish neighbourhood so I think I first balanced one on my head at a bar mitzvah. Ironically I believe it was at this bar mitzvah that I first saw a Hasselblad (professional camera for you non photographers)  and I was in awe. As an assistant I witnessed the charm of the photographer, he was truly genuine with the bride, groom and family. He loved what he did and he did it well. Photographing many of Montreal's Jewish community weddings and he was at the forefront of the industry.  As I spent the next summer with him learning how to load film backs for the camera, taking light readings right under the nose of the bride and the simple poses he was directing, it was the interaction he had with his subjects that kept my interest. That was summer that I truly thought "maybe" maybe I was looking at a career in wedding photography. Thank you Mr. Sotos.

After more than a thousand weddings that I have photographed, I ask myself what continues to drive my passion. There are many aspects that can be captured, from emotions, details, joyful expressions and many other expected and unexpected moments. As important as these are I have one very important expectation from myself. The word timeless is one I hear often from my clients when they describe my photographs. This word timeless probably suits South Asian weddings perfectly as they are strong on tradition and ritual. Their wedding attire probably hasn't change in decades or maybe centuries. From the quality and choice of the fabrics, to the vibrant colours which hold great significance. It seems that all these aspects play a role in maintaining the timelessness of the many days of the wedding. I continue to study as a I create and learn as I edit. The posted wedding below may be from 2013 but in today's trendy wedding photography world I am proud to see that the esthetic of my photography is at par with the traditions of these weddings.
