George Mavitzis Photography | Destination Wedding Photographer | Californian Pakistani Wedding

I have been blessed with a certain family in Montreal that continuously invite me to be their wedding photographer. We all know how colourful Pakistani weddings or any South Asian weddings can be but it’s not only about this. Spending multiple days with all the family members and friends you quickly sense that you truly belong. Literally from the moment you walk into the homes you don’t feel like just the photographer. The genuine hospitality is overwhelming, to a point that you forget that you have a job to do. There’s probably nothing more important as an ingredient for my style of photography than this, that caring and participating in this traditional event is just as important to the task of capturing the images.

So this respect and trust this one family has shared with me, was then equally felt when their extended family in San Jose California hired me. What another delightful experience, what another beautiful couple…..

George Mavitzis Photography | Destination Wedding Photographer | Crete Greece

This relationship started many years ago when this couple from Toronto visited Montreal for their casual shoot in the cobblestone streets of Old Montreal. Fast forward and a small message appeared on my Instagram account. “George would you consider photographing our wedding in Crete next year?”

The next thing to do was to book a flight to Athens and the connection to Heraklion. This gave me a few nights in Athens, catching up with friends and preparing for what was going to be a beautiful wedding.

The couple went out of their way and reserved a beautiful room for me in an old Villa in the old town of Rethymno. This was the town where the ceremony was to take place in a beautiful Greek Orthodox church. The highlight was the traditional procession led by Cretan musicians followed by the bride and her side of the family. You can see this mini journey in beautiful images below.

Following the ceremony we convinced our driver to take us to the Fortress which overlooks both the town of Rethymno and the Aegean sea. After this little experience we drove seaside to what the newlyweds had chosen for the evenings festivities- a beautifully decorated venue right by the sea. It was lit by oversized lanterns which lit up all the emotions, sharing of food, and traditional Cretan dancers. As expected the party continued into the late hours and early ones of the next day. I chose to skip the first shuttle bus and take the last one with the remaining party animals into the old town. As I returned to my hotel in the cobblestone streets of Rethymno it only then crossed my mind that this island was my fathers birthplace. The combination of that thought and that I had brought my passion for photography to this magical and ancient island sweetened my heart. Thank you Stacey and James.
